Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Assalamu Alaikum (peace be with you all),

This alert seeks to update you on the latest developments in Imam Jamil
Al-Amin's legal case and his status in the Alanta prison.

*Imam Jamil under Solitary Confinement*

Since January 7, 2002, Imam Jamil Al-Amin is in 24 hours solitary
confinement in Fulton County Jail, Atlanta, after being cited for
violating the gag order a couple of weeks ago.

Judge Manis ordered Al-Amin in contempt of court, under which he cannot
conduct interviews, mail correspondence, make or receive telephone calls,
receive visitors other than his attorneys and can only speak with his
attorneys. He is being held, at least until the jury has been chosen and
sequestered, a process that could take several weeks.

*Amnesty International fears Prosecutors' unfair Strategy*

In another development, human rights groups, such as Amnesty
International, are critizing Imam Jamil's prosecutors for using a strategy
they say might unfairly influence a jury against the former civil rights
activist. In an open letter to Fulton County, Amnesty International
officials express concern over reports that prosecutors, seeking the death
penalty against Imam Jamil, are planning to introduce excerpts from Imam
Jamil Al-Amin's two books-his 1969 autobiography, "Die, Nigger, Die!" and
"Revolution By the Book," a 1993 memoir written after Imam Jamil converted
to Islam.

"Amnesty International is concerned that the scope for the misuse of, and
juror interpretation of, what may be provocative and unpopular opinions,
taken out of context, is too great in the context of a capital
sentencing," states the letter from Amnesty International..

*Imam Jamil's Activism on Trial*

In an interview Imam Jamil Al-Amin states his activism is what's really on
trial, not his actions: "There has been a purposeful and continuous
persecution of myself and others who have attempted to provide
leadership."

Today, the accused is a respected senior community leader, who runs a
mosque in a poor Atlanta neighbourhood and preaches against drugs and
gambling. He maintains the murder charges are part of a long-standing
government conspiracy against him. He claims the FBI has a file on him
containing 44,000 documents.
